Yonkers is the largest city in Westchester County and the fourth largest city in New York State. It covers an area of 18.3 square miles with 4 1/2 miles of waterfront along the Hudson River. The population is approximately 200,000.
There are 38 unique neighborhoods in Yonkers offering an eclectic mix of housing styles including turn-of-the-century Victorians and Colonials as well as more modern Ranches and Split Levels. Just as the home types vary, so does the terrain, consisting of rolling hills, rocky outcroppings, plateaus, lakes and streams. Founded in 1646 by Adrian Van der Donck (his title “Jonkheer,” Dutch for young gentleman, became the city’s name), Yonkers has long been known as the “City of Gracious Living.” Yonkers’ proximity to New York City (25-30 minutes by car or train) and its reasonably priced homes make it a very desirable community in which to live.
Yonkers is in the midst of a major revitalization of its greatest asset, the waterfront. Its expansive frontage along the Hudson River will feature a five-acre esplanade park and a continuous 4.5 mile river walk with magnificent views of the Palisades and the New York City skyline. The new urban village includes the historic Yonkers Pier (the only Victorian-era pier still in use on the river), the refurbished Metro-North train station (built in the 1800’s), a $53-million Riverfront Library, the Philipsburgh Performing Arts Center, luxury rental apartments, condos, work/live lofts, and a variety of restaurants and businesses.
