The Town of Southeast is located at the crossroads of Interstate highways Route 684 and Route 84 and State Routes 22, 312, 6 and 202. Southeast was founded in 1788 and today has a population of 17,316, which makes it the second largest town in Putnam County, NY.
A peaceful and charming community of nearly 35 square miles, Southeast is located in the Harlem Valley, the southeastern part of Putnam County just north of the Westchester County border.
A diverse pattern of landscape and communities exist in the area of Southeast including reservoirs, lakes, streams, historic farm properties, and suburban housing development as well as retail strips and office parks for commercial use.
Educational Facilities
The Town of Southeast is part of the Brewster Central School System, which serves over 3,300 students in the area. The Brewster Central School System is comprised of two Elementary Schools, including the Garden Street School within the Village, one Intermediate 4-5 School, one Middle School, and one High School. There are also nursery and private located schools in the Village and Town in addition to the Brewster Central School System.
Recreational Facilities
The natural landscape of Southeast provides many opportunities for recreation including biking, fishing, hiking, and more. The Peach Lake Natural Area contains about 138 acres of three preserves: Birdwood, the Paul Fitches Preserve and the Cedar Swamp. The preserves are open to the public for hiking and bird watching year round.
The Recreation department supervises programs for all ages including an active summer camp program and the Town Beach and Lake Tonetta is a popular spot in the warmer months. The natural resources in Southeast provide many opportunities for a strong and diversified recreation program.
